The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is a German single-engine, all-metal fighter in a low-wing configuration with a classic tail. It proved to be the Luftwaffe's basic and most produced fighter during World War II.
Constant improvements made the Bf 109 one of the most dangerous fighters of World War II and, at the same time, showcased the enormous potential of the slightly angled fuselage designed by Willi Messerschmitt.
The G-10 "Erla" is considered one of the most aesthetically pleasing variants of the famous 109 series, especially due to its modified engine cowling.
The Bf 109 G-10 was not a completely new aircraft, but rather a kind of "emergency program" in the final stages of the war to bring the performance of the G series up to par with the superior Allied fighters. It often combined G-series hulls with the powerful DB 605 D engine. The name "Erla" refers to Erla Maschinenwerke in Leipzig. A feature of this production was the asymmetrical, aerodynamic engine hood (often incorrectly called the "Galland hood"), which was necessary to accommodate the larger engine's tubing and assemblies.
