The Sd.Kfz.2 (kleines Kettenkraftrad Sd.Kfz. 2) is a German light multipurpose vehicle of World War II. This vehicle was a combination of a motorcycle and a tracked tractor. The prototype was built at the NSU-Werke plant in 1940. In June 1941, it was officially accepted into the Wehrmacht.
By 1945, more than 8,000 of these vehicles had already been built. Production continued after the war, for civilian needs.
The basic tasks of the Sd.Kfz.2 are above all the transport of small loads, the towing of light weapons and the laying of telephone cables. The Sd.Kfz.2 served mainly in North Africa and on the Eastern Front, on a large scale from 1942.
The vehicle had excellent off-road characteristics and a high top speed. The disadvantage was the highly complex structure, especially the suspension.
